The San Francisco 49ers are hiring former Atlanta Falcons assistant Jerry Gray as their new defensive backs coach, according to a report from CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz. Gray joined the Falcons in 2023, serving as the assistant head coach on defense for the last three seasons.
Gray is an experienced defensive coach with an expertise in the secondary. Before coming to Atlanta, Gray was the defensive backs/passing-game coordinator for the Green Bay Packers for three seasons (2020-2022). Prior to that, Gray spent six seasons as an assistant for the Minnesota Vikings (2014-2019)
The 63-year-old has experience as a defensive coordinator for two different teams. Gray spent three years as the Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator (2011-2013) and held the same role with the Buffalo Bills for five seasons (2001-2005).
Gray will join former Falcons head coach Raheem Morris in San Francisco. Morris was fired after going 16-18 over his two seasons in Atlanta. Despite interviewing for multiple head coaching vacancies, Morris ended up taking a job as the 49ers defensive coordinator, reuniting with Kyle Shanahan.
The Falcons retained most of their defensive coaching staff, including defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, but it's unclear if Gray was asked to return. In other coaching news, Atlanta's defensive pass-game coordinator Mike Rutenberg was hired as the defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns.
