If the field of known candidates for the Atlanta Falcons' general manager position is now closed, then the Carolina Panthers may have to consider themselves lucky.
The Falcons reportedly have plans to chat with five NFL executives for their opening at general manager, with virtual interviews set to begin on Thursday. The group—per multiple reports—includes Chicago Bears assistant general manager Ian Cunningham, Houston Texans assistant general manager James Liipfert, Kansas City Chiefs assistant general manager Mike Bradway, Pittsburgh Steelers assistant general manager and San Francisco 49ers director of scouting and football operations Josh Williams.
That bunch, however, does not include Panthers executive vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis—who caught Atlanta's attention earlier this month.
Tilis previously interviewed for the Falcons' newly-created football president position—which, unsurprisingly, would be filled by the franchise's all-time leading passer Matt Ryan. Atlanta, in regards to that role, also spoke with Cunningham and Williams—who, according to league insider Jordan Schultz, are strong possibilities for the general manager job.
As long as the Falcons stick to that handful of names, Carolina seems likely to keep Tilis—a key piece to the organization's current power structure. In just his second season as part of the front office, the former Kansas City Chiefs salary cap wiz helped piece together the Panthers' first division-winning roster since 2015.
So, you may be able to rest a little easier, Panthers fans . . . at least for one more offseason.
