Klay Thompson has not been the same star player since leaving the Golden State Warriors in 2024. He joined the Dallas Mavericks, signing a three-year, $50 million contract as a free agent. The Mavericks have shuffled their roster since Thompson joined and are no longer the contenders they once were.
One of the main reasons why the four-time champion moved to Dallas was that they made the Finals in 2024, but lost against the Boston Celtics. Many believed they were one player away from winning the NBA championship.
However, things changed when the front office traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis. Additionally, Kyrie Irving suffered a torn ACL and did not play the entire 2025-26 campaign. Davis was also plagued by injuries and was limited to 29 games before he was traded to the Washington Wizards.
After several changes in the roster, the Mavericks won the lottery and drafted Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick in 2025. It’s a clear indication that Dallas is ready to rebuild and concentrate on acquiring younger players.
Klay Thompson, however, doesn’t fit the team’s timeline and could likely be dealt this summer.
Since joining the Mavericks, Thompson has not been his best. He has appeared in 141 games, averaging 12.9 points and 2.8 rebounds on 38.7% shooting from deep. It’s far from how he performed in his 13-year stay with the Warriors.

There are questions about Klay Thompson’s future with the Mavericks. The team has not won for two straight seasons, and Thompson’s reasoning for joining the franchise hasn’t been fulfilled. Despite this, however, the five-time All-Star remains optimistic about staying in Dallas.
The NBA star spoke about it at the Blue Carpet event for the “Mavs Ball Foundation” in March.
The Mavericks have made it clear that they will focus on developing Flagg, which could lead to Thompson’s potential stint with Dallas coming to an end.

“Thompson does not fit Dallas’s timeline, and if the Mavs can get anything–youth, a few second-rounders–for him, they will. He’s still a 38% 3-point shooter,” Sean Deveney of Heavy Sports wrote.

“You want to win. You want to win every chance you can, especially in this league. It’s really hard to win. Although it hasn’t gone our way, it’s still awesome being out there … I love the game with all my heart,” Klay said.
