YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles men’s basketball team is 1-0 on their Canadian tour after picking up a 102-49 victory over University of Calgary on Wednesday afternoon in the Vancouver area.
There was no video stream for this game and highlights on Twitter were scant — just four clips while the game was going on, although two of them have two highlights in them — so all we can do is look at the live stats/box score and get a feel for 1) what happened and 2) how head coach Shaka Smart deployed his team.
But first, those highlights.
Quarter-By-Quarter Scores
Yes, they played four 10 minute quarters here, and yes, I’ve long been a proponent of NCAA men’s basketball doing exactly this.
Quarter 1: Marquette 28, Calgary 11
Quarter 2: Marquette 27, Calgary 9
Quarter 3: Marquette 27, Calgary 22
Quarter 4: Marquette 20, Calgary 7
That’s up 17 after 10 minutes, up 35 at halftime, and up 40 after 30 minutes. Marquette’s largest lead was 53 points, the final score of the game, which they hit on a Josh Clark dunk with less than a minute to go.

And by that, I mean when they checked in for the first time.

Clark checked in for the first time with Marquette up 73-33, while the score was 78-37 when Miletic saw his first action.
Did Not Play: Colton Crowdis and Braeden Brenn, while Nash Walker is not even listed on the active roster for the game. The Walker part is not surprising since he wasn’t 100% cleared from his shoulder labrum surgery in late June.

Foul Merchants: Nolan Minessale (23 minutes), Alex Egbuonu (22 minutes), and Michael Phillips (17 minutes) all had four fouls at the end.
Kills: 14, counting the unattended rebound on a Calgary shot with 11 seconds left. Nine of those were in the first half, and for those of you trying to remember: Shaka Smart’s target is eight kills in a game.

Could I track down stuff like 16-3 in the first quarter to make a point about how this went? Sure, but I think pointing out that Marquette won by 53 in a game where they never scored more than 10 unanswered points does a more effective job of pointing out how the Golden Eagles scored a few in a row, gave up a bucket, and then scored a few more in a row again.
The Josh Clark Of It All
If you’re just going to look at the box score, you’re going to see Josh Clark making all six of his field goal attempts, grabbing six rebounds, dishing two assists, grabbing a steal, and blocking a shot, all in 12 minutes.
However.
He checked in when Marquette was up 40 more than halfway through the third quarter. He ended up a +9 for the game, even though he personally scored 12 points. Generally speaking, if you’re underwater on your own point total in a game that your team won by 50+, that’s not a great sign. To that end, Shaka Smart said right before the trip that if they play Clark for 20 minutes a game, he’ll eventually get to where they want him to be…. but they’re trying to win the game they’re currently playing. Combine that comment and the “didn’t play at all until up 40” and let that roll around in your head before you start making any declarations about where Clark’s development is.
The Transfers
It’s safe to say that Marquette’s season is going to slightly hinge on what they get from Sananda Fru and Nolan Minessale this season. And so:
Fru: 8 points on 3-for-5 shooting, 2-2 from the free throw line, tied for team high with six rebounds, one assist, tied for team high in steals with three, team high two blocks, three fouls, two turnovers, in 16 minutes.
That’s a 16/12/2/6/4 line if doubled for a 32 minute outing, which is more like what he’s going to do when the games count for real. Slash the points and rebounds by 25% because this game was out of control early, and: 12 points, eight rebounds. I’m not going to do the same with the steals and blocks, because come on, no one’s averaging four steals and three blocks. Let’s say 12/8/1/1/1? Are you okay with that output from him?
Minessale: 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting, 1-for-2 from three-point land, 2-for-2 from the free throw line, no rebounds, four assists, two steals, four fouls, two turnovers, in a team high 23 minutes.
We can’t really increase that for a real minute load for the regular season and then slash it back for a more competitive game. That line might be right in line with what’s possible/likely from Minessale this season, although the voice of Jim McIlvaine haunts me and says that he’ll never be Player of the Game if he doesn’t grab a rebound. How do you feel about 11/2/4 and a steal per game?
That’s all I’ve got because I can’t dive that deep on a game where Marquette was up 35 at halftime. Anything stand out to you?
