NEW YORK - Carl Banks can close his eyes and go back four decades in an instant when the New York Giants were the standard setters of the NFL and the trailblazers of the Big Apple sports scene.

A recent photo shoot with Banks and New York Giants teammates Phil Simms, Ottis Anderson and Pepper Johnson served as a time capsule of sorts, unearthing memories of Super Bowl greatness that will last a lifetime.

"Definitely takes me right back to when fandom became fashionable," Banks told NorthJersey.com and The Record, speaking on the Giants' 40th anniversary celebration of Super Bowl XXI, their first of four championships in the sport's biggest game.

"That time was so monumental because stuff we work on the sidelines for games was also being worn by fans in everyday life, and it was cool to wear. The pieces are so iconic, this was the perfect time to bring those feelings back."

The Giants are launching a throwback collection in collaboration with Starter that celebrates their first Super Bowl victory and the1986 championship season. The "'86 Championship Capsule" collection will include original Super Bowl locker room gear, iconic satin jackets, and other sideline pieces worn by players and staff during that season.

A championship hoodie and t-shirt will be available starting Tuesday, May 18, and the rest of the collection will drop the week leading up to the Giants' Oct. 4 game against the Arizona Cardinals, as the team holds a dedicated 1986 Championship Celebration Game at MetLife Stadium.

Fans will have the opportunity to welcome Legends during a pregame walk-in in the plaza, followed by an on-field halftime ceremony honoring members of the 1986 team. The first 25,000 fans through the gates will receive a Mark Bavaro bobblehead. Fans will also have the chance to win a VIP ticket bundle and autographed memorabilia by visiting Giants social media accounts.

The Giants will also air an original content series spotlighting legendary players, defining moments, and the lasting impact of the 1986 Championship season. There will also be an exclusive Phil Simms film breakdown with current quarterback Jaxson Dart, in which the duo analyzes some of Simms’ most memorable plays from the 1986 season, in a video streaming on the Giants’ YouTube channel.

One of those iconic pieces Banks wanted to make sure was part of the collection is the red satin Starter jacket donned by then-Giants defensive coordinator Bill Belichick on game days.

"Everybody knows the red Starter jacket as the Belichick jacket, and for good reason, it's famous for being the one he wore back then," Banks said. "The thing is, Belichick wore the red one to distinguish himself from the rest of the people on the sideline in the hecticness of a game. So that, in frenzied moments late in a close game, at the two-minute warning or something, if we needed a call, we could look to our sideline from the huddle and find the red jacket, he was easier to find."

Banks and Simms were on stage inside Beacon Theatre during the Giants’ Town Hall, sharing in the excitement to once again go down memory lane and relive one of the most significant seasons in the 102-year history of the franchise.

Vibes are high as the Giants look to usher in John Harbaugh’s first season as head coach, and with the promise of building a “bully” on both sides of the ball, Banks takes pride in the quest to emulate what the Giants represented when they set the standard with that brand of football.

In recent years, the Giants have failed to measure up when chasing ghosts of their past. This is an opportunity to honor that with a similar style, a blend of toughness and moxie that comes to life on game day within Dart, Cam Skattebo, Brian Burns, Abdul Carter and others.

“I think that's what makes this so special,” Banks said. “It’s because they are building it in the likeness of what Giants football was when we established all of this. You look at the size of the players, the physicality they want to play with, the mentality that they talk about. how they want to go about the game. And it's like, ‘Wow, I can't wait to see these guys go out there because this is, you know, this is going to be exactly what football was when we were the ones playing.”

Additional initiatives will include a championship caravan trophy tour throughout the Tri-State area, surprise-and-delight moments for fans, and a New York Stock Exchange bell ringing featuring members of the 1986 team.
