When the Denver Broncos signed UFL standout wide receiver Hakeem Butler this offseason, it was an intriguing move, but the general thought was that the team was already deep at the position. In Butler's case, this has become a pattern. He puts up huge numbers in the spring league, signs with an NFL team to compete in training camp, and gets cut.
Butler was originally a fourth-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2019 after a solid college career at Iowa State. But despite the Broncos now being his sixth NFL team, he's never caught a pass in the NFL. However, he has 138 career receptions in the UFL for 2,192 yards and 20 touchdowns. The spring league is keeping his professional playing career afloat.
But Butler has stood out in training camp early on and could be ready to make a push to finally make a 53-man roster and have a chance to use his 6-foot-5-inch frame to make an impact.
The Broncos seemingly have five receivers who are ahead of him on the depth chart and, barring a trade, are going to make the team. Courtland Sutton, Jaylen Waddle, Marvin Mims, Troy Franklin and Pat Bryant are definitely in the team's plans going forward. But if the Broncos keep a sixth wide receiver on the final roster, that spot could easily go to Butler.
Butler would need to prove he is more valuable than Lil'Jordan Humphrey, a long-time favorite of coach Sean Payton, but if he can do that, the other wide receivers on the depth chart are Michael Bandy and four undrafted rookies (Dane Key, Joseph Manjack, Kolbe Katsis and Cam Ross).
The position is there for the taking and Butler has the tools to snag it. He's a great deep-ball threat, and watching plays like the one below could get Broncos fans to conjure up memories of another player who once wore No. 88 (Butler is currently wearing No. 30 for the Broncos).
Butler will be a name to keep an eye on as training camp progresses and when the team takes the field in the preseason. Payton has always liked the big-bodied wide receivers, and Butler could round out his wide receiver room nicely.
