Former New Orleans Saints defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson is on the move again. On Thursday, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero was the first to report that the Buffalo Bills are signing Gardner-Johnson in free agency. Pelissero reports that the deal is for one year and $6 million dollars. For Gardner-Johnson, it will be his eighth team as he enters his eighth NFL season.
Gardner-Johnson got his start with the New Orleans Saints as a fourt-round choice in the 2019 NFL Draft from the Florida Gators. He was with the Saints for three seasons, the most he's spent with any team so far. Over those three years he had 5 interceptions, 28 passes broken up, 3 sacks, and 17 tackles for loss among 122 total stops in 46 games including playoffs.
During 2022 training camp, Gardner-Johnson was traded by the Saints to the Philadelphia Eagles. It was the first of two stints he had with the Eagles, with each lasting a year with a total of 12 interceptions. Between 2022 and 2024 with Philadelphia, Gardner-Johnson played for the Detroit Lions. In the offseason of 2025, the Eagles traded him to the Houston Texans. He'd be released less than a month into the year, where he spent a week on the practice squad of the Baltimore Ravens before being picked up by the Chicago Bears to finish the year.
Gardner-Johnson, 28, now takes his sideshow to Buffalo. He brings a career total of 20 interceptions, 55 passes broken up, 7 sacks, and 27 tackles for loss. Gardner-Johnson has been a part of six playoff teams, appeared in three conference title games with two Super Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl title.
