The biggest news for the Denver Broncos to come out of the NFL combine on Tuesday was head coach Sean Payton's decision to let offensive coordinator Davis Webb handle play calling in 2026.
Payton has called plays dating back to his time as offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys in 2003, and is still considered one of the best football minds around. When it came to retaining now-Broncos offensive coordinator Davis Webb, it was widely assumed Webb would take on a greater role in the building. Although Payton may not be calling plays in 2026, Payton made it crystal clear he would not be stepping completely away, and will still have a say in what goes on the field.
Former New Orleans Saints quarterback Chase Daniel gave his thoughts on Payton giving up the call sheet on Twitter/X.
"I can't fathom Sean Payton ever giving up play calling knowing how he operates," wrote Danie, before giving a rousing endorsement for Webb. "And that should tell you everything you need to know about Davis Webb."
Payton has had one of the best coaching trees in the NFL, as he is a coach who takes underrated coaches and assistants and elevates them to head coaching levels. Payton trusts his staff, and this is just the latest development in Payton's legendary career.
