Many experts believe the New York Giants hit the jackpot in the 2025 NFL draft when Penn State linebacker Abdul Carter with the third overall pick.
Add former Giants executive-turned-NFL Network studio analyst Marc Ross to that list. Ross listed Carter atop his list of this year's "10 rookies in the best situations to succeed in Year 1 and beyond."
Carter was considered by some to be the best prospect in this draft. The Tennessee Titans didn't think so and chose Miami quarterback Cam Ward first overall. The Cleveland Browns also passed on Carter at No. 2 overall. They traded their pick to Jacksonville, who also passed on Carter, taking Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter.
Carter then fell into the lap of Giants general manager Joe Schoen, who for the second straight year, unsuccessfully tried to trade up for the top pick in the draft.
Last year, Schoen had to "settle" for LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers at No. 6 overall after attempting to get into the top three to take a quarterback. That worked out well for him and he just may have landed another stud in Carter by being shut out in the trade market.
Carter can end up being a special player in this league. As Ross points out, the Giants already have a formidable front seven. The addition of Carter just makes it that much more intimidating.
"You saw what he can do when he's rushing on the edge, and the issues that he creates with his get-off and bend is really unique," Giants head coach Brian Daboll said after Round 1 of the draft. "Again, that was his first year, but he's an exceptional athlete. Just really looking forward to working with him. Very happy that we had the opportunity to get this guy."

The defensive line was one of the few bright spots for the Giants in 2024, with a front led by Dexter Lawrence and Brian Burns helping Big Blue tie for the eighth-most sacks (45) in the league. The addition of the uber-dynamic Carter should make the unit even better, with defensive coordinator Shane Bowen able to deploy the Giants' three top edge rushers -- Carter, Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux -- in multiple ways. Carter was the consensus top edge rusher in this year's draft, boasting the skill set and tenacity to relentlessly wreak havoc on opposing quarterbacks.

Watch how quick Abdul Carter’s feet are when he goes left to right, shouldn’t even be possible at his size
