Everton are reportedly interested in signing Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy this summer, according to Sky Sports. Eddie Howe and David Moyes are at St James’ Park and the Hill Dickinson Stadium, respectively.
The 31-year-old winger has entered the final 12 months of his contract at St James’ Park, casting doubt over his long-term future in the North East. With Newcastle undergoing a busy summer rebuild under manager Eddie Howe, the club’s hierarchy are open to considering permanent solutions for ageing players if their valuation is met.
For Everton, signing an experienced, hard-working wide option like Murphy would be viewed as a pragmatic move. While the Toffees have completed a deal worth up to £25 million for Chelsea’s teenage sensation Tyrique George, the management are determined to balance youth with proven Premier League pedigree. Murphy fits this profile perfectly, having been a regular for the Magpies since joining from Norwich City nine years ago and proving his reliability in both domestic and European competitions.
Despite Murphy’s contract situation, Eddie Howe remains determined to keep him, often describing the winger as the ‘ultimate professional‘ whose team-first mentality is vital in the dressing room. Newcastle have already raised significant funds through the record-breaking sales of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for a combined £169 million, meaning they are under no financial pressure to sell.
