On Thursday, the NBA announced the 2024-2025 winner of its annual Defensive Player of the Year award. This year, the honor went to none other than former USC star and current Cleveland Cavaliers big man Evan Mobley.

Per the league’s press release, “In the 2024-25 regular season, Mobley ranked sixth in the NBA in blocked shots per game (1.59) and 13th in defensive rebounds per game (7.0). He contested 10.4 shots per game, the third most among players who played in at least 70% of their team’s games (58 of 82).

Opponents shot 44.5% from the field when Mobley was the closest defender, 3.2% lower than their expected percentage on those shots (47.7%). That difference was the fourth largest among the 30 players who defended at least 1,000 shots for the season.”

Evan Mobley has his individual award. Now Mobley and the Cavaliers need to turn individual success into playoff success. Beating the Miami Heat in the first round of the NBA playoffs has not been a problem, but a looming second-round series against the Indiana Pacers figures to be a significant challenge. If the Cavaliers can get past the Pacers, the Boston Celtics could be Cleveland's opponent in the Eastern Conference Finals. Evan Mobley's season will be measured not just by his DPOY honor, but by the result the Cavs achieve on the court in the month of May.
