The European Athletics Championships in Birmingham have come to an early end to long jump world champion Mattia Furlani after he suffered an injury in his first qualification jump on Monday.
The Italian was limping after his jump, apparently with a hamstring injury, and was forced to leave the runway on a wheelchair.
Last year, Furlani became the youngest long jump world champion with a 8.39-metre jump at the World Championships in Tokyo. Two years ago, he claimed bronze at the Paris Olympics.
