Feb. 13—MITCHELL — Go big.

That's what coach Sherri Johnson wanted her Estelline/Hendricks gymnastics team to do in the Class A state team gymnastics competition on Friday at Mitchell High School.

The Redhawks responded accordingly and claimed their fourth consecutive state championship on Friday afternoon, scoring 140.533 points to claim the title in the eight-team competition.

Estelline/Hendricks was ahead of Parkston/Ethan/Hanson/Mount Vernon in second place (137.819) and Deuel in third (136.500). Madison (136.250), Sisseton (133.134) and Chamberlain (131.967) closed out the top-six places.

"This team has been through so much adversity this season, we've had a bunch of injuries," Johnson said. "We've kept our head down, and for us to actually come through and win the state championship, it just means more than you ever think. I'm just so proud of them."

The Redhawks had the top event score as a team in three of the four events in the Class A competition on uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise, but opened up the widest margin on beam to make the difference, scoring 34.867 points, while PEHMV was fourth on beam and Deuel, which was the top scoring team on vault, was sixth.

"I'm so proud of the team. We really just performed solid. We just said to 'go big and have fun' and we executed that," Johnson said. "You can always do something better, but I couldn't have asked for any more from them. They all did their part, and it was truly a team effort."

Estelline/Hendricks, which has one senior and two juniors, was led by freshman Maggie Hausman and eighth-grader Riah Hartung. Hausman had the top all-around score with 36.883, followed by Hartung (36.783), which was third best among all team day competitors.

Parkston/Ethan/Hanson/Mount Vernon earned its third all-time state runner-up finish, joining 2019 and 2025. PEHMV's top performer was eighth-grader Addison Duba, who led the team in all four events. She scored a 9.200 on vault, 8.700 on uneven bars, 9.383 on beam and 9.533 on floor exercise. She had the day's best score on beam (9.383), was second among all competitors in the all-around, third on floor and fourth on bars and vault.

Hausman and Hartung went 1-2 in the floor, with Hausman charting a 9.583, followed by Hartung at 9.567. Duba was third, Biggins was fourth and Deuel's Laycee Anderson was fifth (9.133).

Chamberlain's Kylah Biggins had the top vault score of the team competition with a 9.350 score, followed by the Redhawks' Hausman (9.283) and Hartung (9.267) and Duba fourth (9.200), followed by Deuel's Tai Engels (9.167).

E/H's Hausman had the top bars score of 9.050, followed by Biggins (8.917) and Hartung (8.717), with Duba in fourth (8.700) and Engels fifth (8.683).

The Class A top individual gymnasts will be back in action at 10 a.m. Friday for the individual honors.
