Production-wise, what will we see from Jacksonville Jaguars' rookie running backs Bhayshul Tuten and LeQuint Allen this season?
Mike Clay of ESPN recently put the 25 drafted running backs into tiers based on what he expects their role to be. And with that, he also projected what each running back's production totals in 2025 might look like.
Tuten would fall into the 'Wildcard' category. There seems to be the potential for wide-ranging outcomes for Tuten this season. On one hand, he joins a running back room already with Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby.
However, on the flip side, as ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported, the new Jaguars' regime "is not so high" on Etienne, and Bigsby has had fumbling issues.
As far as Tuten's projected production goes, Clay has him with 84 carries for 363 yards and two touchdowns. In the passing game, Tuten catches 15 passes for 108 yards and another touchdown.
"Tuten dominated at the combine with RB-best marks in the 40-yard dash (4.32) and vertical jump (40½ inches)," wrote Clay. "He is blazing fast with three-down upside, though his Year 1 opportunities are unclear with Travis Etienne Jr. and Tank Bigsby on the depth chart. That could lead to a limited early-season role, but the uncertainty also allows him a chance to eventually steal starting duties."
With that speed, Tuten was a big play threat at Virginia Tech. Last season, he averaged 6.3 yards per rush and, as you can imagine, was difficult to bring down, ranking 13th in average yards after contact and 16th in missed tackles forced, per PFF.
Allen, meanwhile, was put into the 'Developmental and depth players' category by Clay. With that, Clay isn't projecting any production for Allen this season.
"Allen will try to carve out a third-down role in the pros, though it may take a while," Clay wrote. "As mentioned earlier, Jacksonville drafted Tuten in Round 4 to slot in alongside Travis Etienne Jr. and Tank Bigsby."
With four running backs, there is a bit of a logjam at the position currently, and working four running backs into the game plan is not something that we see.
But with that said, if there is an opportunity for Allen to carve out a role, it could come in the passing game. Allen finished his 2024 season with 78 targets, which includes lining up in the slot and being an early read at times.
As we saw last season with the Tampa Bay offense under Liam Coen, the running backs are going to have to contribute in the passing game in this offensive system.
