MIAMI GARDENS -- Norway star Erling Haaland was substituted out of the match against England in the intermission of extra time at the World Cup quarterfinal.

The surprising decision came as the underdog Norwegians trailed England 2-1 at Hard Rock Stadium in extra time.

The match finished regulation tied at 1-1 after England's Jude Bellingham and Norway's Andreas Schjelderup tallied in the first half. Norway had a go-ahead goal disallowed in the second half due to a foul on Haaland.

The English took the lead in extra time after Morgan Rogers laced a long shot at the Norwegian goalie, who spilled it directly in front of goal for a waiting Bellingham.

Bellingham has tallied twice for England, including a superb goal in the second minute of first-half stoppage time to make the score 1-1 moments before halftime.

The English star midfielder took his chance brilliantly, receiving a pass at the top of the Norway box and completing several dribbled before firing a left-footed shot across the goal and past the goalkeeper's outstretched leg.

Erling Haaland height: How tall is Haaland?

Haaland stands out instantly on the field with his signature topknot and flowing blond hair. He also stands out at 6 feet, 3 inches tall (or 191 cm, if you're using the standard metric system for international soccer players). He's not the biggest guy at the World Cup; that honor went to 6-foot-9 Austrian goalkeeper Florian Wiegele. And former Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, now an analyst for Fox Sports, stands 6-foot-5.

Why doesn't Erling Haaland play for England?

Haaland has dual citizenship with Norway and England, having been born in 2000 in Leeds (his father played in the Premier League). According to ESPN, Haaland's family moved back to Norway when he was 3, so Erling came up in the Norwegian soccer system. "Maybe if my father had played longer in England or whatever, maybe I would be English — I don't know," he said in a 2025 interview. "But I'm Norwegian and I'm proud of it."
