The high school football world has certainly changed all over the country and in California, former NFL Pro Bowl safety Eric Weddle is the head coach at Rancho Bernardo and he’s seen several players leave his program since the beginning of the year.
Over three dozen players and some change.
On the Coach JB Showon Monday, Weddle said on the livestream that around 40 kids have either quit or transferred out of Rancho Bernardo (Ca.) since January.
“I try to help the kids see the big picture, what it looks like to be successful in the next part of life,” Weddle said on the show. “Kids and parents have a tough time with this, and think there are better options elsewhere. At the end of the day we have a standard, and they’d rather leave or not play.”
Weddle also added on the show that his team currently has 38 players to kickoff the 2025 California high school football season. The Broncos opened up the season with a gritty 15-13 victory over La Serna last week. The former NFL’er leads his team to battle this week at home against Brawley (0-1).
The five-time NFL All-Pro safety took over the Rancho Bernardo football program from Tristan McCoy, who retired after the 2022 campaign. Weddle gets the unique opportunity every Friday night to coach his son, Gaige, who plays quarterback for the Broncos.
The younger Weddle is a Class of 2028 four-star prospect and finished last season completing 74-of-117 passes for 1,115 yards, 12 touchdowns and only two picks. He also rushed for 635 yards on 90 touches, scored nine times and already has offers from BYU, Oregon State, San Diego and USC.
