Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Eric Lauer left an impression on the organization after his standout start against the Colorado Rockies.
Lauer came on as a low-cost solution to the team’s run of injuries after Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow hit the injured list, along with Jack Dreyer.
With limited immediate pitching options to call up, the Dodgers scoured the waiver wire, looking for a possible option, and found that Lauer had been designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays.
His experience as a starter and bullpen arm will allow him to possibly stay on if he has success with the Dodgers as well, adding a long-term outlook.

After putting an ERA above 6 with the Blue Jays, Lauer is fighting for his major league life at the moment, and with the Dodgers, he gets the chance to jumpstart it.
How did Lauer do in his debut?
Lauer pitched six innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run, along with a walk. He totaled four strikeouts in 96 pitches as well.
He allowed five hard-hit balls, and the defense totally picked him up with some spectacular plays, but he had a good chase rate on his pitches, 37%, and had a ton of hitters swinging at his stuff.
While, ideally, they whiff more than 7 times over 96 pitches, Lauer’s profile is built on his location and contact, allowing him to limit dangerous fly balls.
His velocity was up 0.6 mph on his season average, which is a very good sign considering how low it was this year. As far as soft-tossing location arms go, Lauer had a good game — providing length and limiting runs, even if it was a pretty outing aesthetically.

The Dodgers tend to value stuff when hunting for their pitchers, even if it means their location may be off or they don’t provide much length.
In that sense, Lauer does not seem like a fit, but with rotation already having swing-and-miss guys and the bullpen having a similar profile of pitcher, the lefty offers a different flavor to the pitching staff.
The Rockies, admittedly, are not too much of a challenge in their current form, and Lauer will need to show he can sustain this against better teams, but he has bought himself time as a swingman for the Dodgers.
