Jacob Bethell was finally out for 154 as England were dismissed for 342 before lunch on Thursday, setting Australia 160 to win the fifth and final Ashes Test.

Bethell added 12 to his overnight 142 after his maiden Test century raised English hopes of back-to-back victories after winning the last Test at Melbourne inside two days.

Australia won the first three Tests in Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide to retain the Ashes.

England resumed at 302-8 with a 119-run advantage after Australia was all out for 567 in their first innings in reply to the tourists' 384.

Bethell departed after edging Mitchell Starc to wicketkeeper Alex Carey, ending a breakthrough innings by the young player being trumpeted as the future of English cricket.

Matthew Potts, who had yet to score when day five began, added 18 crucial runs before Josh Tongue on six fell to Starc to end the innings.

Starc ended with 3-72 while Beau Webster took 3-64.
