The soccer GOAT is now among a select few building buzz for the Golden Boot, the tournament’s trophy for its top goal-scorer. France’s Kylian Mbappé and Norway’s Erling Haaland are not far behind, having each scored four goals so far in Group play.

Messi’s goals thrilled fans in Texas, who witnessed history as the forward set the record for most-ever men's World Cup goals with 18.

For Messi, the game came days after he scored a hat trick, connecting on three goals against Algeria at Kansas City Stadium.

After Argentina's 3-0 victory during its opening 2026 World Cup match on Tuesday, June 16, Messi explained why he got emotional.

"Why did I cry? It was something completely unrelated to football. I went through some difficult days," Messi said. "But I'm grateful to the entire delegation and my teammates because they were always by my side, giving me a lot of strength to help me get through it."

Two days later, Messi’s family released a statement that Lionel’s 68-year-old father, Jorge, was undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness.

"He is currently under medical observation, recovering and progressing favorably within his current condition," the family said in a statement regarding Jorge.
