If there’s a word Faith Vencill uses to describe reaching the milestone of 1,000 kills in her Edgewood career, it would be grateful.

The junior is grateful for what she calls her “God-given” ability, grateful for her teammates and coaches and grateful just to get to play the game she loves for so many years.

Vencill toppled the 1,000-kill mark in the Warriors’ 2-0 win over Garfield in the championship match of the Berkshire Tournament at Berkshire High School Saturday.

“Obviously, it’s a big achievement, but I couldn’t have done it without my team,” she said. “My setters these past years, they did it for me. It’s a great achievement and I’m glad to have it.”

Vencill, the 2024 Ashtabula County Player of the Year, said she was introduced to volleyball at age 2. She was already on a team at age 4.

Vencill become the youngest girl to ever play for Club Ashtabula.

Though she was a starter for Edgewood as a freshman, recording 1,000 kills was not something she ever thought about much.

“My mindset wasn’t really on that,” Vencill said. “It was about the love of the sport, going out there, doing it with my team and for my team.”

It’s also about putting in the work.

Vencill also plays basketball, but volleyball is her top priority in sports.

She’s put in a lot of time working not only with her team, but her brother, Noah Vencill, who is at Wittenberg for school and to plays volleyball.

“She works day and night year-round,” Warriors coach Kyra Vencill said. “We spend a lot of time in and outside of the gym, outside of practice, where she does a lot of hitting.

“She gets a lot of reps, a lot of touches. Having her brother, who’s as competitive as Noah is, they play in the driveway on their own time. She’s constantly working on her skillset. She’s getting stronger, she’s getting older, and she’s getting smarter.”

Now that she has passed 1,000 kills, Faith Vencill is on the verge of 1,000 receptions and 1,000 digs.

Kyra Vencill said at the moment, they are not sure of how many other players have topped 1,000 kills in their career at Edgewood, but Faith is definitely in elite company.

“I would assume Faith is the first one to get it as a junior,” Kyra Vencill said.

The Warriors were sitting at 13-2 on the season, 4-0 in Chagrin Valley Conference Lake Division play, going into Tuesday’s match against Pymatuning Valley.

Then, Edgewood is scheduled to host Jefferson tonight in a pivotal conference match.

Faith Vencill doesn’t know if she has another 1,000 kills left in her high school playing days or not.

“I don’t know, but I’m gonna try my hardest,” she said with a smile.

Vencill, though, knows she’s grateful for every opportunity she has on the court.
