Ed Cooley arrived at Georgetown in March 2023 with one of the richest contracts in the Big East and a mandate to restore one of college basketball’s proudest brands.

Before leaving Providence, Cooley was already the highest-paid coach in the Big East Conference. According to Form 990 documents and state data reviewed by Providence Business News, Cooley earned $4.9 million in total compensation from Providence in the 2023 fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2023. That figure topped all coaches paid by the league’s 11 member institutions during the 2022-23 season.

Georgetown reportedly offered Cooley a multi-year deal worth in the neighborhood of $6 million annually to lure him to Washington. Beyond the financial commitment, the opportunity to follow Hall of Famer John Thompson and revive the Hoyas brand played a key role in his decision.

Now in his third season, Cooley’s tenure has drawn criticism. Georgetown is 13-16 overall and 5-12 in Big East play as of late February, tied for last in the conference. The Hoyas are on track to miss the NCAA Tournament again, and Cooley owns a 40-55 record across his first two-plus seasons after taking over a program that dismissed Patrick Ewing in 2023. With two games left in the season, this will likely be another year Georgetown is outside of tournament contention.

Specific buyout details tied to Cooley’s contract have not been publicly disclosed. However, given the length and annual value of the agreement, any potential separation would likely require a significant financial settlement. Ewing received a reported $11.4 million buyout upon his departure.

For now, Georgetown remains financially committed to Cooley as it searches for a long-awaited turnaround.
