East Peoria baseball ended its season with a win.
The Raiders used a Dalton Oakman walk-off to beat Crystal Lake South 7-6 in the Class 3A state third-place game on Saturday, June 13 in Joliet's Slammers Stadium. This marks the second-highest finish in program history, joining the 1974 single-class state runner-up finishers.
“It’s a special time in East Peoria,” East Peoria coach Matt Plummer told the Journal Star in April. “I always say, ‘Half of life is showing. The other half is pulling the rope,’ and they are the best rope pullers I’ve ever seen. It comes straight from the guidance of their parents.
“… The caliber of human being on this team is greater than the caliber of athlete on this team.”
Oakman stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with one out and the bases loaded. He worked the count to 1-2 and roped the next offering to right field for the game-winning RBI-single. Jacob Bond scored the winning run, acting as a courtesy runner for RJ Duncheon, who had reached on a double.
East Peoria (28-14) entered the seventh inning up 6-1 and appeared to be three outs away from erasing the heartbreak of its semifinal loss. But Crystal Lake South (29-11) scored five runs in the frame, using four hits and taking advantage of an error as well as hit batsman.
Nolan Dabrowski tried to stretch his run-scoring triple to center into an inside-the-park home run only to be gunned down at the plate by East Peoria shortstop Jackson Ahrens.
As part of EP's 10 hits, the Raiders had built their five-run advantage. This offense barrage was highlight by Duncheon's two-run homer in the third. The Illinois State signee finished 3-for-3 with a double, homer, three RBIs and a walk.
Seven other Raiders had one hit, while Oakman picked up the win by striking out three and scattering eight hits over 6.2 innings.
Wes Bogda's 3-for-3 day led Crystal Lake South, which had 11 hits and capitalized on four EP errors.
