East Nicolaus High softball returned to Division III for the first time in four years where it opens the Northern California state prep softball playoffs in Fairfield against Rodriguez at 4 p.m. today (Tuesday).
The Spartans (25-1), champs of the Northern Section Division V for a seventh straight year, are a No. 6 seed and will likely be on the road through the three rounds, capped by Saturday’s NorCal final set at the highest seed available. Should it advance Tuesday, East Nicolaus is likely to get NSCIF D-II champion Las Plumas (28-1-1) in Oroville in the semifinals Thursday at 4 p.m. The last time East Nicolaus faced LP was 2023 when senior star and June Sports Prospect feature Makinze Massey was a freshman. Massey and the Spartans won 9-0. In the MaxPreps era, East Nicolaus is 6-0 against LP.
The top-seed in D-III is Monterey, which earned a bye to Thursday to host the winner of Chowchilla and Chico – the latter is the NSCIF D-II runner-up.
Wheatland baseball opens at Foothill (Palo Cedro)
The Pirates (24-8), champs of the Sac-Joaquin Section for the first time, earned a five-seed and will head to Palo Cedro, up near Shasta County, to open the NorCal prep baseball playoffs in Division III today at 4 p.m.
Wheatland is 0-5 in the MaxPreps era against Foothill, with the last matchup occurring in March of 2024 when junior catcher Kale Nakamura was a freshman. Nakamura is one of the leading hitters for Wheatland during its historic season, hitting over .400 with 32 RBI in 32 contests.
Jordan James, a senior, .379 hitter in 2026, was a sophomore the last time Wheatland faced Foothill (22-8).
A win today and Wheatland is likely headed to No. 1 Roseville, out of the Foothill Valley League. Wheatland has yet to face Roseville in the MaxPreps era.
