EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – With the school year coming to an end, East Lansing High School celebrated 12 student-athletes who will be playing at the next level.
Eight students were on hand for the celebration at the high school on Wednesday. Among those not in attendance was this year’s Mr. Basketball winner, KJ Torbert, who has already moved down to Bowling Green.
Olin Moyer had opportunities to play at the Division 3 level and decided to attend the University of Michigan, with plans to be on the club water polo and soccer team. Moyer says she had great support at East Lansing to make it possible.
“My coaches and teachers were super lenient with me,” Moyer said. “Soccer and water polo are in the same season in Michigan, and all four years of high school I got to play both varsity sports in the spring season. So it was really difficult trying to juggle two sports at the same time, and all my school work, and AP classes, and stuff like that. My teachers were really accommodating and so were a lot of my coaches. They taught me a lot about learning how to communicate and planning things out.”
Xander Grigsby will be playing football at Alma College. When Grigsby first started playing high school football, playing at the next level wasn’t at the top of his mind. He enjoyed the chance to sign and celebrate with his classmates on Wednesday.
“It just feels great seeing everyone here put in a lot of work to get here. It doesn’t always just happen. So I’m glad everybody is here so we can celebrate.”
