The Eagles thanked Jeff Stoutland for his "legendary contributions" after the offensive line coach announced his departure from the organization after 13 years. Stoutland spent 13 years with the organization, turning the Eagles' offensive line into the NFL's best year in and year out. The move comes after reports that Stoutland was stripped of his running-game coordinator duties this season amid Philadelphia's struggles to run the football against stacked defensive fronts. After logging 2,005 rushing yards during the regular season, Barkley was hit or tackled behind the line of scrimmage 84 times with 41 negative runs last season, according to SumerSports.
Stoutland was initially the offensive line coach. Stoutland has been the run game coordinator since 2018, after Philadelphia won its first Super Bowl. One of the most respected offensive line coaches in the country, Stoutland was the longest tenured coach on the staff.
Stoutland's approach to the running game blended zone and gap schemes that weren't hard to decipher and relied on the offensive line dominating up front. That could all change under first-year offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, who's likely to borrow from the Kyle Shanahan/Sean McVay/Matt LaFleur styles of offense, which focus on a "wide zone" scheme designed to create mismatches through motion, misdirection, and personnel. Such a scheme would require lighter offensive linemen, which could mean Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, and Lane Johnson could depart.
