By virtue of winning Super Bowl LIX in dominating fashion, the Philadelphia Eagles will have the benefit of kicking off the 2025 season on their own Thursday night in September.

Who they will end up playing, though, remains to be seen.

Philadelphia has one of the toughest schedules entering the 2025 season, with 10 matchups against opponents who made the playoffs last season. Not all of them can be used to take on the Eagles to kick off the season, though.

Opponents like the Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Rams, Washington Commanders, and Detroit Lions are all quality opponents that the Eagles will see at home this season. All could be the intended matchup that the league wants to push for that coveted Week 1 slot.

The Cowboys, Rams, Commanders, and Lions are future matchups that the league may want to use in major weeks throughout the regular season. Philadelphia is a huge viewership-led team, so they may not want to waste a top matchup in the very first week.

That leaves one NFC team left.

The Chicago Bears.

Chicago has a new head coach, a former first overall pick at quarterback, and increased expectations after a strong offseason. They also are a huge question mark going into the season.

Instead of wasting a marquee matchup to begin the year, the NFL could look to bring a contending NFC North team with upside into the fray instead. That's what they did two years ago with the Detroit Lions taking on the Kansas City Chiefs after Arrowhead hoisted the Super Bowl LVII Lombardi Trophy.

The Eagles could be looking at something similar this season too.
