Howie Roseman typically knows when to push the right buttons, and I think he did that during the offseason when he signed Tariq Woolen, who was once a star on the Seattle Seahawks and was once viewed as one of the better defensive backs in the NFL.
The past few years haven't really gone as planned for him, more so the past year and a half, but there's no debating that this is one of the more talented young players in the league when he's right.
I don't want to say that the Eagles got some steal and he's going to be an incredible player for them, as there were some concerning signs, but I love the idea of at least giving him a shot, and I'm somewhat excited to see if he can be the guy that he was expected to be in the NFL and prove he was during his rookie season now that he's in Philadelphia.
If one thing's for certain, there are coaches in Philadelphia who are very excited to have the young man around, including defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who shared a similar comment to how I believe the Eagles should view him.
“I was excited for him and kind of surprised that he was one of those guys that didn't get a lot of action for a long-term deal,” Fangio said this spring. “I was thrilled to get him. I think he's going to play good for us.”
The bigger part here is not how well he will play individually, but how he fits on this defense. According to the Eagles' pass game coordinator, he's going to give them different looks, and that's exciting in itself.
“There’s not too many guys that look like him playing that position,” pass game coordinator Joe Kasper said, per NBC Philly. “We’ll take advantage of it every way that we can schematically and from a technical standpoint. He’s gotta be coached with a different technique that you coach Q with. They’re two totally different body types so you do talk to them differently.
“That’s why you gotta be able to, when you work in the secondary, work on the different pitches. The pitches that Riq throws are going to be different than the pitches that Q (Quinyon Mitchell) throws. Just like Wheeler is going to throw a different game than Sanchez. It’s very parallel to that, especially at the corner position. You want to be able to give those guys different tweaks and technical elements to be able to enhance their game. Riq has a nice fastball. The length is real, the speed is real. So we’re really, really excited about that.”
