PHILADELPHIA —Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts trusts the plan that new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion has presented.
Hurts’ praise of Mannion, which seemed genuine, was the most notable moment during Wednesday’s organized team activity (OTA) at the Jefferson Health Training Complex.
After practice, Hurts spoke for the first time about Philadelphia’s new offensive scheme since Mannion was hired in January, and the first question put to him was: “How do you see yourself fitting into Mannion’s offense?”
“He’s come in and he’s very clear, giving good direction,” Hurts said of Mannion. “You can definitely see the vision. Able to answer all my questions. Very instructive. Very helpful. So it’s been a very enjoyable journey so far.”
Hurts and Mannion being on the same page is good news for the Eagles heading into the 2026 season, as the team looks to get back to another Super Bowl.
Everything this year hinges on Hurts improving as a passer and on the passing game becoming more productive. Mannion will have to create an offense that maximizes his quarterback’s skill set and makes everyone else around him better.
“Right now, it’s more so laying down the foundation for what we are doing,” Hurts said. “…And then over time, you get to mesh some things. … I’m going at his pace. … He’s been very intentional about what he’s doing and why he’s doing it. Marrying things, getting that shared belief for us all. … There are components of what we’ve done in the past that I know he loves, and he says, ‘We’ve done this really well. ...we’ll see how that fits in.’ But it’s still being installed as we speak."
If Mannion’s new offense helps Hurts play like he did in 2022, when he finished second in the MVP race, or like he did in the final two games of Philadelphia’s 2024 Super Bowl run, the Eagles will likely be one of the league’s top contenders again in 2026.

But it won’t be an easy task for Mannion. Last year, the Eagles lost to the 49ers in the first round of the playoffs because their passing game, which finished 23rd in the NFL with an average of 194.3 yards per game, failed them at key moments. Now, A.J. Brown — the team’s top wide receiver for the past four years — is expected to be traded soon.
Winning with an offense that sputters when it’s forced to pass the ball is not sustainable. Mannion’s scheme could fix that.
“…It’s exciting to be able to learn a new brand of football, get new perspective and just grow,” Hurts said.
ESPN reported in April that certain members of the Eagles’ organization have been frustrated with Hurts.
While Hurts deserves some blame for the Eagles’ struggles, his situation has not been easy.
He has played under four offensive coordinators over the last four years, and two of those coordinators, Brian Johnson and Kevin Patullo, did a poor job of running the offense and were fired at the end of the year.
Hurts had a strong command of Philadelphia’s offense under former Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen in 2022, but then Steichen left to be the head coach of the Colts after that season. Patullo, Johnson and former Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore were not able to replicate that success. Can Mannion?
“I do want to become an expert at the position,” Hurts said. “I do want to grow in the position. That’s obviously hard to do when it’s always changing. But that’s not going to stop me from trying to be the best I can be. I’m just trying to grow and take in the coaching.”

Mannion, the former Packers quarterbacks coach, is expected to run a West Coast system with influences from Rams coach Sean McVay, Packers coach Matt Lafleur and other coaches.
“The base of the offense was running inside zone,” Hurts said of the team’s offensive scheme over the last five years. “That’s not typical for this west-coast type of style. I think that’s a natural difference.”
“From the pass game standpoint, as things have evolved, we were very one-on-one dependent on trying to find a matchup instead of full flow west-coast style of offense.”
