Dylan Harper was already considered a talented player coming out of college, but when he was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs, he quickly drew comparisons to the franchise’s legendary left-handed guard, Manu Ginobili.

Harper was selected No. 2 overall and is regarded as one of the top players in his draft class. He went second overall behind phenom Cooper Flagg, who was selected by the Dallas Mavericks. He may be a rookie, but expectations for him are already high. The Spurs are banking on him to help form their new Big Three.

The other two members are Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle, who arrived in San Antonio during the summers of 2023 and 2024, respectively.

The Spurs are getting a high ROI so far in their rookie with his reliable players and defense during their Western Conference Finals win over the defending champions Oklahoma City Thunder. Harper has become a fan favorite to the point that they are comparing him to one of the franchise’s legend – Manu Ginobili.

Harper is aware of the comparison.

“I think that’s a fair comparison to say. I think it’s an accurate comparison. We’re both lefties, big guards,” he told reporters during a press conference for the 2026 NBA Finals with the New York Knicks.

Harper made it to the All Rookie First Team. Ginobili was picked 57th overall in 1999 and finished in the All Rookie Second Team.

“I’ve had a lot of conversations with him, especially when I first got here. Me and him kinda talked a lot about the role of the team and what to do, things of that nature,” the rookie continued.

“I think he’s kinda, more than anyone for me, been that vet that’s been around the Spurs for a long time and kinda just giving me insight of what he’s been through.”

The young Spurs squad’s alleged disadvantage this playoffs is their inexperience but throughout the playoffs, their legendary players have been there for them. There’s coach Gregg Popovich who has been consistent in giving advice to the players and Tim Duncan who is present in the games.

Ginobili is also present on social media and in games to give advise to the young Spurs.
