NEED TO KNOW

  • Dwight Howard called the Gwinnett County Police, alleging his estranged wife, Amber Rose Howard, stole from him
  • He claimed in the March 7 call that Amber Rose stole jewelry, his wedding ring, cash and personal items from his car
  • Two days later, both Dwight and Amber Rose separately filed for divorce

Dwight Howard's legal battle with his estranged wife, Amber Rose Howard, continues.

On March 7, the NBA champion, 40, called the Gwinnett County Police, alleging that Amber Rose stole items from him. He told authorities that Amber Rose took “all” of his possessions, a quartz crystal chain, a wedding ring, phones and money from his car, according to police body camera footage obtained by PEOPLE on Tuesday, March 17. Dwight alleged Amber Rose stole close to $20,000 from him.

Prior to the alleged incident, Amber Rose filed for divorce last summer before the two reconciled. Then, on March 9, just two days after the recent encounter, Dwight filed for divorce. Amber Rose filed later that day, according to TMZ. The former couple tied the knot on Jan. 11, 2025.

While speaking to police on March 7, Dwight said that he and his son were planning to leave and “do some stuff with [his] daughter," per the body cam footage.

“I went to get my son, and when I came back out to my car, all my stuff was gone,” he said.

He did not clarify which of his five children he was referring to. The retired NBA player is the father of three sons, Braylon, 18, Dwight, 12, and David, 12, whom he shares with Royce Reed, Christine Vest and Melissa Rios, respectively. He also shares daughter, Layla, 15, with ex-girlfriend Tiffany Render and daughter Jayde, 15, with Hope Alexa.

Dwight also alleged that his bag holding his wallet, passport, driver's license, social security card and three credit cards were stolen.

During the call, Dwight also addressed the previous police reports that the Georgia Division of Family and Children (DFACS) had been called to his home.

PEOPLE confirmed that authorities were called to his Suwanee, Ga. home three separate times on successive days from March 5-7 for what police say were a suicide threat, a domestic incident and a theft report.

Additionally, during the March 7 call, Dwight told officers that DFACS had come to their house a few weeks before the March incident, according to police body camera footage.

After the March 7 call, Dwight's ex-girlfriend Tiffany Render requested an emergency order for custody of their 15-year-old daughter, Layla, on Monday, Mar. 16, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE.

Render submitted the initial filing because she had "serious and immediate concerns" about her daughter Layla’s well-being and safety.

"Layla was recently admitted to a mental facility after expressing thoughts of harming herself and has repeatedly stated that she feels fearful and emotionally distressed about returning to her father's home which she believes contributed to her crisis," Render claimed in the custody modification, alleging that the situation resulted in involvement from the Georgia Division of Family and Children (DFACS).

Render explained that, given her daughter's mental health situation and the risk to her well-being, she feels that it is in Layla's best interest to live with her until the matter can be reviewed by the court. Layla also submitted an affidavit of custody election, requesting to live with her mother.

On Tuesday, Mar. 17, the court denied Render's request for an emergency order. The judge explained that Render hadn't filed the controlling custody order she wanted to modify and added that they didn't see the case as an emergency.

Render will have to file the appropriate document, and the court will settle the matter in a temporary hearing.

Dwight and Render didn't immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.
