Dwayne Johnson is explaining his absence from Wrestlemania.
After fans expressed disappointment when Johnson, 52, didn't participate in the annual wrestling event, where John Cena won his record-breaking 17th WWE world championship, Johnson explained his thought process during an April 22 appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.
When McAfee asked Johnson about his conversations with the WWE organizers, the former wrestler — who goes by "Final Boss" in the WWE — said, “They know, when I come to them and lay this out, ‘Here’s how I feel it should go. We can insert Final Boss into the end of this finish, but then where do we go?’ "
"There are other commitments that I have and I want to be careful that we’re not overstepping," Johnson continued. "I can get involved in the finish, but why get involved in the finish when the spotlight should just be on John, 17, heel champion?"

The "anchoring storyline" of Wrestlemania 2025, in Johnson's opinion, is "What does 2025 look like if this man is saying he's going to ruin pro wrestling?" he told McAfee.
Johnson said they'll "go back to" previous storylines in the future, "but right now, it's not [the storyline]."

Johnson also praised rapper Travis Scott's participation in the annual event, saying it "immediately amplified" the energy. "I love Travis Scott involved...He loves wrestling, he's a huge fan. He respects it."
The wrestler-turned-actor also said he "loved" the storyline and agreed with McAfee that 2025 was "a great Wrestlemania."

In January, Cena, 47, told PEOPLE that fans should expect “more unpredictability” to come with his wrestling character’s storyline in the WWE.
He also shared some insight into his plans for once he officially retires from the ring. “When I can no longer compete, I will always be a member of the WWE family in some capacity, whether I can pass on my wisdom through mentorship or be an advocate and a spokesperson for the brand,” Cena said. “They certainly will have to shoo me away, because I'm like you, I'm a fan first and I love it so much."
