The Dutch football body KNVB has said it has filed criminal complaints after players were racially abused after the team's exit from the World Cup.

The Netherlands lost on penalties against Morocco in the round of 32. Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville failed to convert their spot kicks and were abused on social media.

“Unfortunately, it is never possible to be foolproof to identify and sanction every racist reaction, but the KNVB is making every effort to send a very clear message: there are limits, and anyone who crosses them must face the consequences,” the KNVB said.

“Football brings together millions of different people, whereas discrimination has the opposite effect. This therefore runs counter to everything football stands for,” the association had said in a statement the day after their World Cup exit.
