Ever since former Duke Blue Devil Cameron Boozer was selected with the No. 3 overall pick at the 2026 NBA Draft, many awaited a decision on his new number in the NBA. Although Boozer's college number (No. 12) opened up after the trade of Ja Morant, Boozer ultimately decided to go in a different direction, choosing No. 27.
Following the decision, Boozer revealed what made him choose No. 27 as opposed to other options, saying, “I did it for my mom. Going to stick with it this year and maybe for a couple of years. We’ll see if things change, but I’m liking 27 honestly.” Boozer's mom, Cece Blackwell, wore No. 27 when playing college volleyball at North Carolina Central University.
Only two players have worn the No. 27 in Grizzlies history (Kalin Lucas and David Roddy), but neither of them played more than two seasons with Memphis.
