LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Greenville Drive battled back too late in an 8-5 loss to the Jersey Shore BlueClaws, breaking the series tie in game three. The BlueClaws improves to 26-39, while the Drive drops to 26-37.
Yophery Rodriguez got things rolling with a solo shot in the first to give the Drive a one-run lead. Jojo Ingrassia got the ball for the Drive, and after a 1-2-3 first inning, he issued a lead-off walk in the second that set up an RBI triple for Daunte Stuart, tying the game early.
The game remained tied until the BlueClaws ran away with it in the fifth, scoring seven runs off relievers Tyler Davis and Matt McShane. Davis allowed RBI doubles to Brandon Lewis and Devin Saltiban, and a two-run homer by Luke Davis made it 5-1, bringing in McShane. Joel Dragoo then launched a three-run homer to left, extending the lead to 8-1.
McShane settled in and sent down his next six batters before Greenville began to chip away with a four-spot in the eighth. Gerardo Rodriguez set the tone with a single to put one on for Luke Heyman to come behind him and send one over center field for his third of the season, and his first since his debut in late May.
Back-to-back walks and a single for Mason White loaded the bases. A sac-fly for Ronny Hernandez drove in Isaiah Jackson, forcing Jose Pena Jr. to come in for the BlueClaws. He’d hit Freili Encarnacion as the first batter he saw to reload the bases, to which Justin Gonzales would take the third walk of the frame to jog in Jack Winnay, 8-5.
Despite their efforts, the Drive’s offense couldn’t get over the hump, resulting in the BlueClaws escaping a comeback loss. Greenville ended up with seven hits, going 1-for-11 in scoring position and left 10 runners dry. Heyman’s two-run homer counted toward his notable 2-for-4 night with two hits, a run scored, a walk, and two RBIs.
Devin Saltiban went 2-for-3 with two hits, a double, a walk, and an RBI, with the big swings coming from Dragoo and Davis for the Jersey Shore.
Davis suffered the first loss of his season after his fifth-inning performance. Responsible for five out of the 10 hits and six of the runs scored by his opponent. Starter Luke Gabrysh earned a win after his strong outing with three hits, one run, and six strikeouts in five innings for the BlueClaws.
The Greenville Drive look to even up the series in game four on Friday, with first pitch set for 7:05 PM.
