FREDERICK, Md. — The Greenville Drive made a late push Wednesday afternoon, but the Frederick Keys used steady offense throughout the middle innings and a three-run seventh to hold off Greenville, 6-4, in Game 2 of the six-game series at Nymeo Field.

Frederick improved to 26-14, while Greenville fell to 16-25. The Keys collected 17 hits and went 7-for-17 with runners in scoring position, building enough separation before the Drive scored four runs over the final three innings.

Greenville trailed 6-2 entering the ninth before Yoeilin Cespedes brought the Drive within striking distance. Henry Godbout drew a two-out walk and moved to second on defensive indifference before Cespedes launched a two-run homer to left field, his eighth of the season, cutting the deficit to 6-4.

Jack Winnay followed with a walk and advanced to second on defensive indifference, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Isaiah Jackson lined out to right field to end the game.

Cespedes finished 1-for-4 with the two-run homer, two RBI and two walks. Adonys Guzman also homered for Greenville, launching a solo shot to right field in the seventh for his third home run of the season. Jackson added a double, while Justin Gonzales and Mason White each singled.

Frederick starter Boston Bateman kept Greenville quiet early, working 5.2 scoreless innings while allowing two hits, two walks and striking out six. The Drive created their first major threat in the second inning when Jackson was hit by a pitch, White singled and Antonio Anderson walked to load the bases with two outs, but Bateman escaped with a forceout to keep the game scoreless.

Frederick broke through in the third. Alfredo Velásquez walked, stole second and moved to third on a groundout before Wehiwa Aloy dropped an RBI single into deep shortstop, giving the Keys a 1-0 lead.

The Keys added another run in the fourth after Leandro Arias singled, Colin Yeaman followed with a base hit and Velásquez delivered a two-out RBI single to center, scoring Arias for a 2-0 advantage.

Greenville starter Dylan Brown worked around traffic through five innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with one walk and three strikeouts. He stranded runners in scoring position in the second, third and fourth innings and limited the Keys to single runs in each scoring frame before exiting after the fifth.

The Drive cut the deficit in half in the seventh when Guzman jumped on the first pitch from Jacob Cravey and sent it over the wall in right field, trimming Frederick’s lead to 2-1.

The Keys answered immediately in the bottom half, turning five hits and a Greenville error into three runs. Aloy opened the inning with a single and advanced to third on a throwing error. Victor Figueroa followed with an RBI single to make it 3-1. Later in the inning, after singles from Yeaman and Ryan Stafford loaded the bases, Velásquez delivered again with a two-run single to deep shortstop, pushing Frederick’s lead to 5-1.

Velásquez drove in three runs for the Keys, finishing 2-for-2 with two walks, a stolen base and a run scored. Arias went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base, while Yeaman added three hits. Aloy and Figueroa each had two hits and an RBI.

Greenville loaded the bases again in the eighth without a hit, using walks from Godbout, Cespedes and Winnay against Braeden Sloan. Yophery Rodriguez drew a two-out walk to force home Godbout and cut the Frederick lead to 5-2, but Sloan struck out Guzman to strand three.

Frederick added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Figueroa walked, Elis Cuevas doubled and Arias singled to left to score Figueroa, extending the lead to 6-2. Greenville turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning and keep the deficit at four.

Brown took the loss for Greenville, falling to 0-3. Osvaldo Berrios allowed three runs over 1.2 innings, while Joey Gartrell gave up one run over 1.1 innings of relief. Bateman earned the win for Frederick, improving to 2-2.

The Drive drew eight walks but finished 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.

The two teams continue their six-game set Thursday, May 21, at Nymeo Field.
