DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) — At one Wiregrass school, it was a week of celebration as not one, not two, not three, but four star athletes made their college decisions official, and took another step forward in their athletic careers.

Now they’ll look to grow as stars on baseball diamonds across the southeast, as they will be headed to four different schools.

Starting on the bump, pitcher Edmund Cody signed on to join the Pirates of Pensacola State. Cody has been a key piece of the Wolves’ rotation in his time at Dothan, although his junior year was cut short due to injury.

But he’s back and healthy for his senior season before taking his talents to Pensacola. Cody has aspirations to play baseball at the highest level. A big key to that is playing baseball at a place that will give you the best opportunity to show your stuff and succeed. That was a big reason why Cody said he chose the Pirates.

“Great guys there, great coaches, I think it’s just the best opportunity for me. I think they’re very interested, and I’m very interested in them, so I think it worked out,” said Cody. “I mean, I’m looking to go play baseball for the rest of my life, that’s my dream. So going there, I can get my school done, do whatever I need to do there, play baseball, it’s gonna be fun.”

The pitcher’s right-hand man also put the pen to the paper on Wednesday. Catcher Perrin Gomez will take the short trip down Highway 84 west to play ball at Enterprise State.

Gomez has been an anchor for the Wolves in his time behind the dish, earning all-state honors and hitting .397. Thriving in the heart of the order as he led the wolves in almost every offensive statistic in his junior year.

Gomez is excited not only to have an opportunity that not many people get, he’s also happy to be able to stay so close to home while living out his dream.

“I know a lot of people don’t get the opportunity to play baseball out of high school, and I’m really grateful that I have that opportunity, so I’m really excited for that,” said Gomez. “That means a lot to m,e being able to be home and be with my family and not having to leave them. I know a lot of people think that it’s part of the college experience to leave home and stuff, but I’m perfectly fine staying home with my family, being close to them while I’m still playing baseball and going to school.”

Now back into the infield — second baseman Emmanuel Lewis will be making the trip up to Tuscaloosa — signing to play for the Stillman Tigers.

Lewis had a stellar junior season, hitting .340 and posting an almost insane .500 on-base percentage, all while leading off for the Wolves. The Wolves’ coaching staff spoke highly of Lewis, saying, “If you could coach 100 kids, you’d want 100 of them to be like Emmanuel Lewis.”

Lewis showed just as much appreciation for his coaches and hopes he can continue living that role-model style of life as he enters college.

“Just stay out of the way, stay out of trouble, do myself, and don’t get unfocused, just stay on course,” said Lewis. “I’m thankful for my coaches, giving me the time to work with me and make me get better. I’m really glad for that.”

Last but certainly not least, we have the other star of the middle infield, shortstop Carter Richards, who will be joining the Bison of Southern Union State. Richards was an everyday starter at the shortstop position his junior year, a reliable infielder and a solid bat to boot, hitting .312.

One thing Richards says he will take most from his time with the Wolves is also a key piece of building a great baseball team, which often gets overlooked: having chemistry with your teammates so it doesn’t feel like just a team; it’s really a family.

“I’ve learned just to stay determined, and teamwork and building upon each other will build a good team,” said Richards. “I think we have a really strong bond, we’ve kinda built more of a family than just a team, and I would love to take that with me to any team I ever play on.”
