The Cleveland Cavaliers no longer have to wonder about the future of their franchise player.

Just weeks after leading Cleveland to the Eastern Conference Finals, Donovan Mitchell has committed to the organization for years to come. ESPN's Shams Charania reported Tuesday that the six-time All-NBA guard agreed to a four-year, $273 million maximum contract extension, ending any speculation about whether he would test free agency down the road.

The decision is significant for more than just the dollar amount. Mitchell reportedly left even more money on the table to sign now, sending a clear message about where he wants to be as the Cavaliers continue chasing an NBA championship.

According to ESPN, Mitchell's new deal is worth $273 million over four years and includes a player option for the 2030-31 season along with a full trade kicker. The extension also replaces the player option that had been part of his previous contract.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is what Mitchell reportedly chose not to do. ESPN's Bobby Marks noted Mitchell could have waited until next summer and become eligible for a five-year contract worth approximately $353 million, roughly $80 million more than the extension he agreed to this week.

Instead, Mitchell signed on the first day he became eligible, reinforcing his long-term commitment to the Cavaliers.

Mitchell continues to show faith in Cleveland

The extension marks the second time Mitchell has recommitted to Cleveland since arriving in a blockbuster trade from the Utah Jazz before the 2022-23 season. Since then, the Cavaliers have reached the playoffs in all four of his seasons with the franchise. Mitchell has earned four consecutive All-Star selections in Cleveland and has been named All-NBA three times during that span, including First Team honors in 2025.

Across his Cavaliers career, the 29-year-old has averaged 26.7 points, 5.3 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game while helping transform the franchise back into an Eastern Conference contender.

Cavaliers still have 'unfinished business'

Mitchell made it clear after Cleveland's season ended that he wasn't interested in looking elsewhere. Following the Cavaliers' Eastern Conference Finals loss to the New York Knicks in May, Mitchell apologized to the fan base and vowed the team would return stronger.

"I'm sorry for the city of Cleveland," Mitchell told reporters after the series. "We'll be back. We'll be ready. We'll be hungry. And we'll be locked in."

Tuesday's extension backs up those words.

ESPN also reported that Mitchell has remained heavily involved in conversations about improving the roster and would welcome a reunion with LeBron James should the four-time NBA champion decide to return to Cleveland in free agency. Whether that blockbuster move materializes remains to be seen, but one thing is now certain.

The Cavaliers have secured the face of their franchise for years to come, ensuring their championship window remains wide open as the Eastern Conference continues to evolve.
