Many fans and analysts were surprised that Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders did not get picked in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft on Thursday.

Apparently, so was President Donald Trump.

Sanders was projected to go as high as No. 3 overall to the New York Giants, but scouts seemingly agreed that the 10-21 range was likely where he would end up going if he was picked in Round 1 at all.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers passed on Sanders with the 21st pick, some wondered if he could be who the Giants were targeting when they traded back into the first round. New York made Sanders wait a little longer after it took Ole Miss’ QB Jaxson Dart, leaving many to wonder which team—if any—would pull the trigger on Sanders in Round 2 on Friday.

Despite the sting of not being a first-round pick like his father, Dallas Cowboys legend and Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, Shedeur seemed pretty upbeat in a video posted to social media in which he addressed those attending his draft party.

“I don’t feel like this happened for no reason,” he said. “All this is, of course, is fuel to the fire. … But we understand we’re on to bigger and better things. Tomorrow’s the day, and we’re going to be happy regardless.”

And while Shedeur seemingly took his lumps in stride, Trump appeared to be much more disgusted by the Big 12 Player of the Year’s draft fall.

“What is wrong with NFL owners, are they STUPID?” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Deion Sanders was a great college football player, and was even greater in the NFL. He’s also a very good coach, streetwise and smart!

“Therefore, Shedeur, his quarterback son, has PHENOMENAL GENES, and is all set for Greatness. He should be ‘picked’ IMMEDIATELY by a team that wants to WIN. Good luck Shedeur, and say hello to your wonderful father!”

Sanders is expected to be taken somewhere in the second or third round on Friday.

The QB-needy Cleveland Browns have the first and fourth picks in Round 2, and the New Orleans Saints, who reportedly considered Dart in Round 1, have the eighth pick in the second round and could be inclined to grab Sanders if he’s still available.

Though the Steelers don’t have a second-round pick because of the DK Metcalf trade, some have speculated they could try and trade back into Round 2 if Sanders starts to fall again.
