USA president Donald Trump is rarely shy on social media and he’s very vocal after FIFA reversed Folarin Balogun’s World Cup red card.

Soccer fans are taking to the internet questioning FIFA’s decision, and even claiming corruption from Gianni Infantino and Co. However, it’s clear that Trump’s influence certainly played a role in the Balogun matter.

Trump posted on social media Sunday to approve of FIFA’s decision to reverse the Balogun red card. Meanwhile, Trump’s relationship with the FIFA president is certainly being questioned after the two have been spotted together many times in the build up to the World Cup.

American fans received a shocking blow during the Round of 32 when Balogun was ejected during the Bosnia and Herzegovina match. The U.S. striker exited the game in the second half after a lengthy review on a dangerous challenge.

The Athletic reports that FIFA’s decision to overturn the red card comes as a shock to many fans. Their original statement suggested that the U.S. had no recourse after the serious infraction.

“In line with article 27 of the FIFA disciplinary code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year,” per FIFA.

“If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement.”

However, Balogun’s ineligibility for the Belgium game originally caused a big issue for manager Mauricio Pochettino. Balogun is the top goalscorer for the Americans at the 2026 World Cup with three goals.

Meanwhile, his connection with Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Sergino Dest is proving successful. The American-born goalscorer is helping the U.S. attack as they make a deep run in the tournament.
