The Seattle Seahawks made a lot of great decisions last offseason en route to winning Super Bowl 60. None was bigger than John Schneider's call to sign quarterback Sam Darnold to a three-year contract in free agency worth just $100.5 million. Darnold's deal with the Seahawks pays him $33.5 million annually, making him the 18th-highest paid quarterback in the NFL.

Darnold is scheduled for free agency after the 2027 campaign. Given the amount of success the Seahawks endured this past season, one may think Schneider and Darnold will engage in contract extension negotiations this offseason. That apparently isn't the case.

Schneider typically doesn't negotiate contracts with players who possess two years remaining on their contract. At the NFL Combine however, Schneider confirmed he's willing to break that rule for Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Devon Witherspoon, who are also signed through 2027 thanks to their pending fifth-year options. Despite that, don't expect the same for Darnold, ESPN's Brady Henderson confirmed.

But that organizational rule would apply to Sam Darnold, who signed a three-year, $100.5M contract last March. Don't expect an extension for the QB this offseason since he still has two seasons remaining.

If Darnold even comes close to repeating his 2025 form in 2026, the Seahawks will definitely have to negotiate an extension with him next offseason. He may be well-positioned to demand more than $50 million per season. There are currently 11 quarterbacks earning more than $50 million annually. Darnold will anxiously await his opportunity to talk extension with the Seahawks.
