The Miami Dolphins are signing kicker Zane Gonzalez as their new kicker, just days after veteran Jason Sanders was released after eight seasons with the team. The report comes via Ari Meirov on X, via Gonzalez’s agent.
Gonzalez has spent eight seasons in the NFL with five different teams—Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, Washington Commanders, and most recently, the Atlanta Falcons. Gonzalez missed the entirety of the 2022 and 2023 seasons through injury, spending the latter of those on the injured reserve list of the San Francisco 49ers.
What do Zane Gonzalez’s stats look like?
Over his entire career, Gonzalez has made 115/142 field goal attempts, around 80%. Last season, Gonzalez made 19/22 field goal attempts (86%), and was 7/9 (77%) for field goals of 50 yards or more. The league average for field goals is around 85%, and 72% for field goals of 50 yards or more.
The highlight of his season came on this game-winning kick for the Falcons last season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, shown below.
With Sanders’ release, many thought the Dolphins would turn to Riley Patterson, who started for them last season. Though he was 27 for 29 on field goals, his leg strength is nothing to write home about. In that department, Gonzalez is considered the better kicker. It remains to be see if Gonzalez has already secured the starting job, or if the Dolphins will bring in another player to battle it out with Gonzalez.
