The Miami Dolphins, whether they admit it or not, are starting a rebuild in 2026 after firing their general manager and head coach and moving on from several of their most-talented players in the last few months.
This offseason, we've seen the Dolphins get younger, adding 24 rookies through the draft or as undrafted free agents afterwards. They've also brought in a slew of veterans on inexpensive, one-year deals to fill out the roster.
The combination of the lackluster roster and one of the hardest schedules in the league, Miami will probably have one of the worst records in the NFL in 2026. However, ESPN's FPI does not favor the Dolphins, and it actually gives Miami a 20.1% chance to secure the top pick in the 2027 NFL draft.
"For some teams, it's a race to the bottom. And before the season begins, it's the Dolphins who are 'winning,'" ESPN's Seth Walder wrote. "The FPI has the Dolphins -- who are starting fresh with a new head coach (Jeff Hafley), GM (Jon-Eric Sullivan) and quarterback (Malik Willis) -- as the worst team in football, just barely edging out the Jets.
"But the Dolphins face the third-hardest schedule and the Jets face the sixth easiest. So Miami has a 20.1% chance to earn the No. 1 pick, while the Jets are at 17.1%. The Cardinals and Browns follow behind at 15.3% and 12.8%, respectively. Those four teams have the best shot to land Arch Manning, Dante Moore or one of the many other quarterback prospects expected to be in the 2027 draft."
Miami may have signed Willis to a three-year contract to be their starter, but if they finish with the top pick in the draft, they will probably end up using it on the top quarterback in a draft that's supposed to be loaded at the position.
If that's the case, fans won't be happy watching the product throughout the year, but the hope that they could have next offseason would make up for it.
