The Miami Dolphins are wading into some uncharted waters.

It's a team that hasn't been a cellar dweller, at least in recent history. However, that is expected to change in 2026 as the Dolphins are seen as likely to descend into the deep, dark depths of the ocean.

They signaled as much when they opted to part with Mike McDaniel, Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and just about anyone else that might help the team win games. De'Von Achane remains, but the running back isn't a miracle worker.

It's a Herculean task ahead for head coach Jeff Hafley and GM Jon-Eric Sullivan, the new regime that took over this offseason. They come into the rebuild with a blank slate for the most part after overhauling the roster upon arrival. For now, the immediate success of the team rests on the right arm of Malik Willis.

If he can continue his ascent, then the team has solved the biggest issue in any rebuild. If he doesn't, then buckle up. There's no telling how long the road to contention will be, but everyone knows it starts at the 2026 NFL Draft.

Here's what to know about the Dolphins' picks, needs and a mock draft for Miami ahead of the big event.

Dolphins NFL draft grades

This section will be updated after the Dolphins make their first selection.

Dolphins 2026 NFL Draft needs

Wide receiver

This is to be expected for a team that just subtracted Hill and Waddle, opting to replace them with Tutu Atwell and Jalen Tolbert in free agency. Reinforcements should be on the way in the draft as the Dolphins attempt to build around Malik Willis.

Defensive back

Same story, different position. Miami opened up another hole by trading Minkah Fitzpatrick, adding safety to a list of needs that already included cornerback. This entire position group needs an overhaul.

Edge

Bradley Chubb was another player on the lengthy list of departures, meaning Miami will need someone that can get after the quarterback.

Dolphins 2026 NFL mock draft

Here's what the Dolphins could do come draft night, per Ayrton Ostly's seven-round mock draft:

  • Round 1, Pick 11: OT Francis Mauigoa, Miami (FL)
    • Yes, the Dolphins have a glaring need at wide receiver but they will address that later on. What you can’t find later on in the draft is premium offensive line talent. Right tackle Austin Jackson signed a one-year extension which doesn’t preclude Miami from drafting his successor. Bringing Mauigoa in with his mauling presence and strong anchor will ensure Malik Willis has a clean pocket in 2026.
  • Round 1, Pick 22*: WR Omar Cooper Jr., Indiana
    • Another trade. Miami moves ahead of some wide receiver-needy teams to select one of the top pass-catchers from the national championship-winning Hoosiers squad. Cooper runs after the catch like a running back (27 forced missed tackles in 2025) with experience both outside and in the slot. Miami brought in speed in the wide receiver room with Tutu Atwell and Jalen Tolbert but they get a more well-rounded player in Cooper here for Willis and the offense.
  • Round 2, Pick 43: CB Brandon Cisse, South Carolina
    • Finally, the Dolphins address the secondary. Cisse is an athletic outside cornerback with the speed to take on plenty of assignments but he needs some discipline to reduce the number of big plays he gives up on a game-by-game basis. Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley’s specialty is the secondary and Cisse could grow into a long-term starter outside.
  • Round 3, Pick 75: S Zakee Wheatley, Penn State
    • Miami overhauls the secondary even more in Round 3 with a safety to build around for the future. Wheatley took a step in coverage in 2025 (69.2 passer rating when targeted) while continuing his physical presence against the run.
  • Round 3, Pick 87: WR Ja’Kobi Lane, USC
    • After getting a top wideout in Round 1, Miami continues to add to the room in Round 3. Lane is a big-bodied outside target at 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds who uses his basketball background to box out defenders. He could be a solid red zone target sooner rather than later.
  • Round 3, Pick 90: RB Jonah Coleman, Washington
    • De’Von Achane is set for a ludicrous number of carries in 2026 and needs some help. Coleman is a sturdy 5-foot-8, 220 pounds, with the pass-protecting acumen to stay in on passing downs. He’d be good insurance for the Dolphins’ top offensive weapon.
  • Round 4, Pick 130: DT Chris McClellan, Missouri
  • Round 5, Pick 151: DT Gracen Halton, Oklahoma
  • Round 7, Pick 227: TE Matthew Hibner, SMU
  • Round 7, Pick 238: S Austin Brown, Wisconsin
