The Miami Dolphins claimed former Las Vegas Raiders defensive tackle Matthew Butler off waivers, the team announced Tuesday. To make room on the roster, the team waived undrafted rookie Tre'vonn Rybka, a defensive tackle who signed with the Dolphins last week.
Butler, 25, was a fifth-round pick for the Raiders in the 2022 NFL draft and spent the first three seasons of his NFL career with the team. He spent significant stretches in the last two seasons on the Raiders' practice squad and appeared in 15 games in his three-year Las Vegas tenure.
On Monday, Butler was one of six players cut by the Raiders after the team signed a half-dozen players who impressed on a tryout basis in rookie minicamp. That included veteran linebacker Jaylon Smith and defensive lineman Jahfari Harvey.
The Dolphins entered the 2025 offseason with few options on the defensive line and the depth got even thinner when Calais Campbell and Da'Shawn Hand departed as free agents. The solution for Miami was to add three linemen in the 2025 NFL draft, including first-round pick Kenneth Grant.
Penciled in as likely starters for Miami are Grant, Zach Sieler, and Benito Jones, leaving Butler to compete with veteran Matt Dickerson and rookies Jordan Phillips, Zeek Biggers, and Alex Huntley for remaining roster spots.
