Going into the Freeway Series on Friday, the Los Angeles Dodgers had not won a game against the Los Angeles Angels in seven straight matchups. And the Dodgers had not won a series against the Angels since July of the 2023 season when two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani was still representing the Halos.

On Friday, the Dodgers ended the seven-game losing streak. Then on Saturday, a five-RBI night from Ohtani helped the back-to-back World Series champions claim the Freeway Series for the first time in two seasons.

Most of the Dodgers’ runs in the beginning of the game did not come from hits. Los Angeles scored five runs on four walks and two hit batters, while catcher Will Smith contributed a first-inning sacrifice fly and outfielder Alex Call hit two-run single in the top of the sixth inning.

But then in the eighth inning, Ohtani hit an RBI triple and a throwing error from Angels outfielder Jo Adell allowed the defending NL Most Valuable Player to make it all the way home. Then, shortstop Mookie Betts added on another run with a solo homer in the same inning.

“It was good to see our offense really come to life. Even in that one big inning, I think we only got one hit,” manager Dave Roberts said, per MLB. “But just taking walks when we needed to, and stressing their guy who is their ace right now and throwing the ball really well.”

Ohtani hit a three-run double in the ninth inning to cap off the Dodgers’ season-high 15-run victory against his former team. The Dodgers and Angels will play in the series finale on Sunday at Angel Stadium.
