Just before the Los Angeles Dodgers were set to kick off their three-game weekend series against the Baltimore Orioles, two-way star Shohei Ohtani was not in the series-opening lineup.
The Dodgers announced that Ohtani will be away from the team on Paternity Leave, but will be back sometime this weekend.
The team provided no specifics on exactly how long Ohtani will be away. Since he is not being officially placed on the Paternity List, no corresponding move will be made in the wake of his absence.
This will mark the second time in his MLB career that he’s been placed on paternity leave. The first occurrence of Ohtani being placed on the paternity list happened on April 18, 2025, when he and his wife, Mamiko, were expecting their first child.
Thus far, Ohtani's 2026 campaign has been one to remember.
It's his first time in a Dodgers uniform, acting as a true two-way player, and he's exceeded expectations on both ends of the diamond.
Offensively, Ohtani is leading the Dodgers in batting average (.296) and is ranked 12th in all of baseball. His .963 OPS is second in the National League behind Juan Soto and leads all of the National League in OBP (.418).
On the mound, Ohtani has been a force to be reckoned with and has slotted himself into an exciting NL Cy Young race.
In 12 games started this year, he has accumulated a 1.47 ERA in 73.2 innings pitched. He has punched out 78 batters with a 0.88 WHIP.
Even with the strong start to the season, it has come with its fair share of battle scars.
Most recently, he has been dealing with a blister issue on his middle finger in his throwing hand. In his last start against the Tampa Bay Rays, he was bleeding towards the end of his six-inning outing.
Additionally, he has also been dealing with left knee inflammation that has sidelined him for two games in the past week and a half.
Still, these issues seem to present no concern for skipper Dave Roberts as they try to work through it. Ohtani even stated to the media that his knee began to swell due to poor pitching mechanics in his start against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
As of the moment, there is no word as to whether the Dodgers will eventually place Ohtani on the official paternity list.
