Dodgers 'need' versatile infielder like former Yankees batting champion with .759 OPS originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Los Angeles Dodgers already have the best roster on paper in the Major Leagues, but if there's one area where they lack depth, it's the bench.
Second baseman Hyeseong Kim began the season at Triple-A Oklahoma City, leaving Dalton Rushing at backup catcher, Alex Freeland, and Santiago Espinal as infield options, and Alex Call as the fourth outfielder.
Not to mention, Tommy Edman and **** Hernandez began the season on the injured list. Should the Dodgers make an external addition or wait until Edman and Hernandez return?
FanSided's Austin Owens believes the NL West club should at least consider taking a look at the free agent market.
Dodgers could sign former Yankees three-time All-Star, two-time batting champion
"If there is one other slight need the Dodgers have, it is a utility player off the bench. Every day position players are set for Dave Roberts, but someone like DJ LeMahieu could make a bigger impact than people realize," Owens wrote Tuesday. "Tommy Edman and **** Hernandez are both also on the IL for the Dodgers, so their options beyond their normal starters are currently limited."
LeMahieu, 37, remains unsigned after being designated for assignment by the New York Yankees last July. He won a utility Gold Glove Award with the Yankees in 2022 and was a hitting machine for the first two seasons (2019, 2020) in the Bronx, but he is clearly not the same caliber of player.
The two-time batting champion's injuries could have led to his inconsistent play, and age also likely played a factor. Los Angeles could seek a player who has skillsets similar to LeMahieu's, but the veteran probably won't be the guy they choose.
