The Los Angeles Dodgers are off to a strong start this season, which comes as no surprise. Los Angeles made several major offseason additions, including Edwin Díaz. However, Díaz’s recent absence following a relief appearance left many wondering what exactly was going on.

“Edwin Díaz said he isn’t dealing with anything physically. Felt during the outing Friday he didn’t have his usual life on his fastball, but said he’s had issues with early-season fastball velocity every season since injuring his knee in the 2023 WBC,” The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya wrote.

The Dodgers never fully clarified why Díaz went a few games without appearing. Manager Dave Roberts did indicate, however, that it would not be a long-term concern.

“Dave Roberts said the Dodgers are still gonna "tread lightly" with Edwin Díaz's workload as he works to get his velocity up. His usage will be evaluated "day-to-day" for now. Roberts clarified that the concern level with Díaz is low & that "it's not an IL thing we're talking about" Instead, he framed it as just wanting to be cautious with their new closer until his stuff is back to where it normally is,” California Post’s Jack Harris wrote.

Now, about a week removed from his last outing, more clarity has emerged regarding Díaz’s situation. The veteran closer revealed he has been dealing with knee discomfort.

“Diaz blew his first save of the season in his most recent appearance, which was against the Rangers in the opening game of the Dodgers’ recently completed homestand. He said he experienced discomfort in his right knee,” New York Post’s Dylan Hernandez wrote.

This update gives fans a clearer understanding of the situation. At this point, the issue does not appear to be serious, but rather something the team is monitoring carefully.

Díaz is expected to play a key role in the Dodgers’ success this season, even on a stacked roster. Los Angeles is likely to take a cautious approach with him, but he could return to regular usage sooner rather than later.
