Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed Yoshinobu Yamamoto would return to the team after his quarterfinal game against Venezuela.
Yamamoto will start the game against Pool D’s runners-up, and will look to get his team off to a similar start as he did during his first WBC outing. In his first appearance, Yamamoto threw 2.2 scoreless innings and struck out two batters to help Team Japan on their way to a 13-0 win. They went on to win all of their games in Pool C and finish first.
The right-hander is the clear choice for the start, as he is by far Team Samurai’s best pitcher. In 2025, Yamamoto had a 2.49 ERA through 30 starts, and just managed to reach the 200 strikeouts mark in his final appearance of the regular season.

He had an even better postseason, allowing just six earned runs through 37.1 innings pitched. He made three appearances in the World Series, and took home the World Series MVP award for allowing just two runs through 17.2 innings of work.
Roberts didn’t reveal why Yamamoto would leave the team, but with the championship so soon after the quarterfinals, it’s hard to imagine the Dodgers or Team Samurai would risk injury by having him pitch so soon.
Yamamoto made two appearances during spring training prior to leaving for the WBC, and struck out seven batters while allowing three earned runs in 4.2 innings pitched.
