NFL referees are held to an impossible standard. Anything less than perfection and they're the subject of scorn on the internet and in text threads across the country.

But for as high pressure a job as being an NFL referee is, it is not full-time. In fact, most NFL referees have jobs outside football to make a living. Let's dive into the Super Bowl 60 crew for a timely example.

Shawn Smith's crew will be officiating Sunday's game between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots. It's Smith's first Super Bowl, while umpire Dana McKenzie, side judge Eugene Hall and back judge Greg Steed are all making a return to the NFL's grandest stage. Here's a quick breakdown of what jobs they have outside the NFL, or what industries they work in, courtesy of Football Zebras:

  • Head referee Shawn Smith: Finance
  • Umpire Roy Ellison: IT engineer
  • Down judge Dana McKenzie: Claims adjuster
  • Line judge Julian Mapp: Software quality assurance tester
  • Field judge Jason Ledet: Physical therapy and rehabilitation
  • Side judge Eugene Hall: Federal agent
  • Back judge Greg Steed: Computer systems analyst
  • Replay official Andrew Lambert: Business development

Quite a versatile group! Only one more game until they return to their day jobs, and it's the biggest of them all.
